Good evening bloggers!
Yet again another week has flown by. This week during any spare time I had I spent some time drawing cloth. It always amazes me how I think I know how clothes sit on people, I then go and do some research and find out I know nothing about it at all…. When designing characters for CG it really helps understanding what a character wears and the structure underneath the clothes as this helps everyone from the modellers to the riggers and also the animators . Every fold in the characters costume should be doing something, either it should be showing off the structure of the character and or, how heavy or light the cloth/fabric is. In this image you can see the structure of his legs in the folds of his coat, you can also see how the folds are part in the structure of his personality, how he holds himself and so on. How could cloth/fabric play a part in a characters personality? take this guy (used picture of Bogart from Casablanca for ref), on the outside stands with his hand in his pocket, his shoulders are dropped and he is smoking. He is hiding his eyes, which makes us think “shifty” what else is he hiding? if you look closely at his coat, the belt is not used properly, its pulled tight and tied in what looks like an aggressive knot. It really is amazing how clothes say so much about us, as you can see from the silhouette even though he has a long coat and hat on it say so much about him.
